List of Images of Pages of Printed Cases
in the New York Public Library

In the Ford Collection at the New York Public Library there are two volumes entitled Prize Appeals. The volumes contain 189 pamphlets, bound together, and dating from 1736 to 1758. They are said to have originally belonged to Sir William Lee (1688–1754, CJKB 1737–1754) and his brother, Sir George Lee (?1700–1758), the noted civilian. As the title suggests, most of the pamphlets are printed cases in appeals involving prizes, arranged by the name of the vessel involved and foliated. A few of them, however, contain printed cases in appeals to the Privy Council as we have defined such appeals. Through the courtesy of Reproduction Services at NYPL, we obtained images of those printed cases and include them here. NYPL asks that we mention that their Rare Book Collection is supported by the Astor, Tilden, and Lenox Foundations.

Appellant’s case

Case of the appellant (Catherine Mansfield v Thomas Bontein)
Case of the Commissioners for Victualing His Majesty’s Navy, relating to several large quantities of wine and brandy . . . , with an Appendix: “Being an Abstract of Several Acts of Trade and Navigation; and Copy of His Majesty’s Order in Council of the 24th December 1740”

Counsel

D. Ryder; W. Murray

Note

It is unclear whether the Appendix belongs with the Commissioners’ printed case or with that of the Respondents, as the person who arranged the pamphlets in their current volume seems to suggest. It is signed by one Temple Stanyan, who does not seem to have been of counsel to anyone in the case. Perhaps it might be analogized to the modern joint appendix, because the text of the Navigation Acts and of the Order in Council are relevant to both cases.
