Biography/Description |
An Anglo-Norman canonist, was the author of a procedural treatise, Practica legum et decretorum (c.1183–89). He later became bishop of Ely (1189–1197), a papal legate, and chancellor of the English king Richard the Lionheart. During Richard’s time away on crusade, he governed England but faced opposition from Richard’s brother, John. After exile and efforts to negotiate the release of Richard from Emperor Henry VI, he returned to England with Richard and finished out his days in the king’s service and as bishop until his death in 1197. |
