Canonist from Besançon, doctor decretorum, chaplain of Cardinal Hugh of St Cher, and deacon of Toul mentioned in a letter of Innocent IV in 1254. Author of lectura on Gratian’s Decretum. According to Kuttner, the commentary consists primarily of excerpts from Johannes Teutonicus’ Glossa ordinaria and the Casus of Bartholomeus Brixiensis but does include some of Petrus’ own observations. The work was clearly intended for use in schools, and, although it is not notable for originality or expanding upon the work of predecessors, it deserves attention as the first instance of the systematic combination of the two genres of glosses and casus in a didactic work, a combination that became common in the printed editions of the Decretum after the year 1505. |
